Wildfires Rage in New Mexico

Las Cruces, New Mexico – Last week a small fire on the Diamond A ranch outside o Las Cruces grew out of control, scorching more then eighteen thousand acres of land. Sierra County to Vote on Spaceport Tax Tuesday

Las Cruces – Tuesday residents in Sierra County, New Mexico will vote on a gross receipts tax which if approved will go mostly to help the state pay for the construction of Spaceport America. Virgin Galactic is slated to be the anchor tenant at the facility--when it opens they plan to blast tourists into sub-orbit for about $200,000 a ticket. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, state officials say a lot is hinging on the outcome.

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico recently received an overall poor rating on the availability of affordable housing in this year's State of the Rockies report card published by Colorado College. According to the publication only three county's in the state including Otero County earned an A.

Legislation Introduced to Stop the Flow of American Weapons to Mexico

Las Cruces, NM – This week, New Mexico United States Senator Jeff Bingaman introduced legislation aimed at reducing the flow of weapons to Mexico. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, weapons smuggled across the border are believed to be the principal source of guns used by Mexican Drug Cartels.

Governor Richardson Addresses Policy and Protestors at NMSU

Las Cruces – New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson delivered a foreign policy speech Wednesday at New Mexico State University. The Governor addressed members of NMSU's newly formed International Relations Institute and stressed the importance of open dialogue between nations. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, prior to the Governor's arrival a group of NMSU students and faculty tried to get his attention by holding a protest regarding the controversial dismissal of two minority junior professors.

First Commercial Photovolatic Opens in Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM – The city of Las Cruces held a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate Dona Ana County's first commercial photovoltaic system located on the roof of the southwest environmental center, or s-w-e-c. The six kilowatt system includes thirty three solar panels.

Otero County Sheriffs Settle Lawsuit With ACLU and MALDEF

Las Cruces, NM – Earlier this week a settlement was reached between the Otero County Sheriff's Department, the ACLU of New Mexico and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund over allegations that the department committed civil rights violations by conducting immigration sweeps. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, the department denied any wrongdoing but did agree to change their Standard Operating Procedures as part of the settlement.
