NMED Asks For Review of ASARCO Air Permit

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexico Environment Department Secretary Ron Curry is urging the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ, to review its air permit renewal for Asarco Smelter in El Paso. Earlier this year, the Texas agency voted in favor of the renewal despite concerns from several environmental groups and local governments. KRWG's Marco Grajeda has more.

Freeport McMoran Announces Layoffs in Grant County

Las Cruces, NM – Monday Grant County's biggest employer Freeport-McMoRan announced the layoffs of 36 employees at the Tyrone mine. This announcement came on the heels of last week's layoffs of almost 100 workers at the Chino Mine. As KRWG's Evan Woodward reports, Freeport-McMoRan says the layoffs were the result of tumbling copper prices.
