Friday, August 6th through

The Branigan Cultural Center is presenting two exhibits:  “People of Chiapas” a series of Chiapas photo essays by Linda Montoya, and “Chiapas: People, Architecture, and Landscapes,” photographs by Susan Bryant both opening on Friday, August 6th with an artist’s reception from 5 to 7pm as part of the downtown ramble.   People of Chiapas is on display through August 21st, and the exhibit “Chiapas: People, Architecture, and Landscapes,” is in the Richardson gallery through August 28th. Now through Saturday, Aug. 7 
The Juried UTEP Student Poster Competition is featured at the Glass Gallery in the Fox Fine Arts Center on the UTEP campus until Saturday, August 7th. The exhibit features posters about social and political concerns by UTEP Graphic Design students. It's in conjunction with the current summer exhibition at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at UTEP: "Up Against the Wall: Posters of Social Protest," also up through August 7th.  [INFO: (915) 747-6151]
 

Sunday, August 1st. (through August 27th)

The Tombaugh Gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibit “Re-emergence: Old to New" on Sunday, Aug 1st from noon – 2:00 p.m. The exhibit features the works of the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM) and explores the theme of old ideas and images re-emerging as new visualizations and expressions.  The exhibit runs through Friday, August 27th. The Tombaugh Gallery is located at 2000 S. Solano. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 2pm. [INFO: 575-522-7281] 

Now through August 13th

The Dona Ana Arts Council is accepting entries for artists to compete during the first annual Plein (Plain) Air competition through the 13th of August. “Color Las Cruces” takes place on September 11 & 12th.  During the event weekend, juried artists will compete for cash and merchandise prizes in one of two Plein Air categories. To compete, artists will go to a pre-determined outdoor location in Las Cruces during a four-hour period on Saturday morning, where they will begin and complete a painting, then return with the finished piece. Artists may enter in one of two categories; Professional or Open. Entry deadline for both plein air categories is August 13, 2010. Winners will be announced on the evening of September 11th and shown on September 12th.  [INFO: (575) 523-6403] 

Now through August 20th

SUMART is now calling for artists in all media for the 2ND ANNUAL SUMART FEST taking place Friday, September 10th through Sunday, September 12th at Mikey’s Place.  The deadline to submit two to three images of artwork and a short artist’s statement is Friday, August 20th.  Entry forms are more are available at the sum art website:  sumartfest dot org.  [INFO: 575-312-9892]

The Preston Contemporary Art Center in Mesilla is showing its Summer 2010 Exhibition, featuring works by Tom Millea, Francisco Saenz, Louis Ocepek, Judith Content and Richard Heinsohn. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. [

The No Strings Theater Company presents the play “A Delicate Balance” by Edward Albee at the Black Box Theater on the Downtown Mall, now through Sunday, August 8th.  Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays, August 1 and 8 at 2:30 p.m. and a Thursday performance on August 5 at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are available in advance and reservations are strongly encourages.  [INFO: (575) 523-1223] 

Friday, August 6th, through Sunday, August 22nd

The Las Cruces GLBTQ Center is looking artists and photographers who are willing to donate their work for a benefit art show to be held at a local gallery in September. Proceeds will go toward the Center's programs. The center is also calling for actors, dancers and musicians who would like to participate in the creation of a performance event celebrating human diversity to be held in October. The town of Silver City hosts an Art Market every Saturday from 9 to 3. Local arts and crafts including pottery, hand-woven textiles, jewelry, crafts and much more are featured in the market which is located on North Bullard. Now through September 1st 

The Tombaugh Gallery is calling for regional artists within a 150 mile radius of Las Cruces to submit proposals for exhibitions for the 2011 year.  Non-traditional media or subject matter is welcome.  All artwork must be for sale. Submissions should contain a letter of proposal with information about the artist, type of work to be shown and a disk of 8 representative images as jpegs. Deadline for submissions should be postmarked no later than September 1, 2010. [INFO: tombaugh-gallery at zianet dot com.

Tuesday, July 27th

As part of the Every Other Tuesday concert series at the Rio Grande Theater, the Dona Ana Arts Council presents local singer and songwriter, Lillis Urban. She will perform songs from her new album, All You Ever Had Was Road live from the Rio Grande Theater stage, on July 27th at 5:30 p.m.   “Every Other Tuesday” is a free performance series.  [INFO: (575) 523-6403] 

Thursday, July 29th

Las Cruces band Liquid Cheese and Stereo High from Las Vegas will be at Mikey's Place Thursday July 29. Music begins at 9PM. This is an all-age venue. There is a suggested donation at the door to defray touring expenses for Stereo High. [INFO: 575-640-3869  mikeysplacenm dot com  

Friday, July 30th

The City of Las Cruces Music in the Park Series features Azucar and Red Hot and Red performing latin, Jazz and Salsa on Sunday, August 1st at YOUNG Park.  The concert is free and open to the public however pets are not allowed.  The event begins at 7pm.  [INFO:  541-2000] 

Monday, August 2nd

Mesilla Valley Dance presents "Elements," a dance workshop for students ages 12 and up with at least 2 years of dance training.  Jazz, Ballet, Hip hop, Modern dance, Choreography and Improvisation will be offered at the Mesilla Park Recreation Center starting August 2.  Dancers may register for individual classes or the entire workshop.  One-week and two-week sessions are available.  There is a fee for the workshops.  [INFO: mesillavalleydance dot webs dot com]

Silver Spirit Gallery in Silver City is celebrating the First Friday Art Walk with an Artists'  Reception on Friday, August 6th from 5 - 7 pm.  The featured artists include: David Brink and husband and wife team, Jo Ann and Marion Childress. Susan Bryant, who’s photographs are on display in the exhibit “Chiapas: People, Architecture, and Landscapes” will give the lecture, “Volunteer Work in Chiapas” on Saturday August 7th at 1pm. at the Branigan Cultural Center.  It is free and open to the public.

The American Southwest Theatre Company (ASTC) at New Mexico State University Theatre Arts will be holding auditions for its Fall 2010 productions on Saturday, August 21st at the Hershel Zohn Theater on the NMSU Campus.  Audition times are from 10am to 3pm.  Needed are men and women ages 18-60.  Callbacks are scheduled for Sunday, August 22.  Interested individuals may sign up for an audition slot on the callboard in the Hershel Zohn Theatre lobby between August 1 through 20. The Border Artist will be celebrating their 20th anniversary year with a group exhibition titled "Intense Dialogue", hosted by Catherine and Don Brenner at The Unsettled Gallery in Las Cruces.  A gala reception will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28th from 5-8 pm will kick off the exhibition, which runs thru Oct. 2, 2010.  The exhibit features the works of new members Jenni Higgenbotham, Michael Ponce, Jean Reece Wilkey, and Terry Wolfe.  Also Sherry Doil-Carter, Janice Cook, Tauna Cole-Dorn, Tom Gerend, Winfrey Hearst, Annetta Hoover, Suzanne Kane, Cassandra Lockwood, Rosemary McLoughlin, Diana Molina, Jesse Reinhard, Jeanne Rundell, Jo-an Smith, Dan Tapper, Scott Weaver, and Bob Willis will be featured.  [INFO: : 575-635-2285.
