The Friends of Thomas Branigan Memorial Library are accepting nominations for their 2010 Author Award. The Annual Award will occur on Sunday, September 19, 2010. The Author must be a current resident of Dona Ana County, and the book must have been published in 2008 or 2009. Categories are non-fiction, fiction, poetry, short story, or children's literature. The Alamogordo Speaker series is currently accepting stories about the Bataan Death March from the community for their event “Bataan:  The History—The Aftermath” that will be taking place in March.  The Speaker Series is collecting stories, photos and memorabilia for publication in the Memory Book to be made available at the event.   The coordinators of the Speaker Series are asking citizens, their relatives or friends if they have a story of sacrifice, survival, and/or aftermath of the Battle for Bataan that they would like to share.  The coordinators can be c0ntacted at a number we have here.  [INFO: echoofthedesert@yahoo.com or 575 443 4408]

The Silver City/Grant County Widowed Persons Service will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 8th at Western New Mexico University cafeteria in Silver City. The Friends of Thomas Branigan Memorial Library host monthly Book Reviews on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  On February 9th, Amy Garcia will review "Crazy Loco Love", by Victor Villasenor. The Silver City Food Co-op's February Community Forum will be about Label Reading and a Scavenger Hunt with Chris Jepson, RN, RD on Tuesday, February 9th and Thursday, February 11th from noon-1 pm in the Co-op Community Room, behind the storefront. Learn how to maximize the nutritional value in the foods you purchase with the 10% rule. Wednesday, February 10th

The Native Plant Society, Las Cruces Chapter will be presenting a program featuring UTEP Professor of Botany C. Edward Freeman who will give a talk entitled “Sex and the Single Flower,” focusing on floral morphology, color, nectar, and pollinator type. The talk takes place on Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm in the Conference Room of the Social Center at the University Terrace Good Samaritan Village.  It is free and open to the public.  [INFO: 523-8413]

 

Thursday, February 11th

The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Society will be meeting on Thursday, February 11th at The Indian Hills Baptist Church as part of their annual potluck and meeting.  The meeting begins with a Potluck Dinner at 6:00 pm. Attendees are asked to bring their own plate, drinking glass, utensils, napkins, a beverage and a dish to share. Temple Beth El presents Dr. David Ruderman (Roo-der-man) in a series of talks Friday and Saturday at the Temple on Sonoma Springs Avenue. Dr. Ruderman is the scholar in residence and will be talking Friday night at 8:15 about “The Rabbi’s, Kabbalists, Magicians and Physicians—an introduction to the History of Jewish Medicine and Science”.  A reception will follow the talk.  Saturday afternoon, he will hold a discussion about “Three Jewish Doctors of Early Modern Europe and their Vital Contributions to Jewish Culture” at 12:30 at the Temple’s Social Hall.  His visit will conclude with a talk Saturday night at 7:45 about “Kabbalah, Science and Loving One’s Neighbors, A Popular Hebrew Text of the 19th Century”.  The talks are open to the public.  [INFO: 647-1808]

Monday, February 15th

The Gila Friends Meeting, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Pax Christi Silver City, and the Grant County Peace Coalition present a talk by the founder of Voices for Creative NonViolence, Kathy Kelly, on Monday, February 15th at the Silco Theatre in Silver City.  The talk is entitled "Eyewitness to War, Witness to Peace," describes her experiences while living in Iraq from 1994 to 2004.  The talk begins at 6:30pm and is open to the public.  [INFO:   Diana Edwards, 388-1258]

Monday, February 15th

The Silver City Food Co-op will host “Farmers & Friends" in the Co-op Community Room on Monday, February 15th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The meeting is a gathering of local farmers and growers with Co-op staff to discuss how to sell produce to the Co-op, the Farm to Co-op Program, and who is growing what in 2010. Tuesday, March 2nd

Fairlight Community Gardens at the Community of Hope Presents the 9th talk in the Garden Lecture Series entitled “Seed starting/Transplants & Spring gardens” by Eric Luther.  The talk will be a hands-on talk and participants will leave the event with planted seeds from the Garden.  The event is free and open to the public.   We will provide the seeds (saved from our garden) and soil, if you bring the pot to plant them in. ·         Crossroads City Derby, the all women’s Las Cruces Roller Derby team, is currently recruiting women who want to participate in regular Roller Derby tournaments.  The Crossroads City Derby welcomes women of all experience levels, shapes and languages. ·       The Foundation for Las Cruces Museums, a non-profit organization that supports the City of Las Cruces’ four museums, is seeking reliable, responsible volunteers to work in their gift shop, El Mercado de los Museos, located in the Las Cruces Museum of Art. While retail experience is helpful, it is not required and training will be provided.
