Now through August 1st.

White Sands National Monument will be holding regular Sunset Strolls in the park now through August 1st.  The one-hour ranger-guided walk will take participants through sand dunes and learn about the geology, plants, and animals of this National Monument. The program starts at the sign along the dunes drive about five miles from the visitor center. No charge for the program but the regular entrance fee rates apply.  [INFO: 575-679-2599]

Now through Friday, August 20th

The Southwestern Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is seeking musicians for a competition in the “Border Regions” of West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, who write and perform in any musical genre. They are looking for songs that deal with issues of Civil Liberties relating to Border Issues, Immigration, and/or the AZ law, SB 1070.  Three finalists will be selected from the entrants to perform at the Chapter’s Annual Meeting, to be held on September 17, 2010.  The winner will be selected at that time and will receive a 4 hour recording session from Barefoot Records.  The deadline for submission is Friday, August 20th.  [INFO: William Hudson (575) 536 3092 or Williamhudson43 at msn dot com]

The 2nd Annual MainStreet SalsaFest is accepting applications for the salsa makers competition by Friday, July 30th.  Home-made salsa makers and restaurants who want to compete at the MainStreet SalsaFest on Sunday, August 29 will be eligible for awards and prizes.  Applications can be obtained by calling the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership office at or they can download the application at the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership website. Thursday, August 4th

St. Luke's Health Care Clinic, Inc., in partnership with the MMC Family Practice Residency Program and HELP-NM is offering Free training to community members on Thursday, August 4th at the Memorial Medical Center Conference Center.  Dr. Matias Vega of the Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless project will be presenting an overview of Health Care for the Homeless.  The training will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and includes breakfast.  An RSVP is requested before July 30th.  [INFO: by email to tim.miller at slhcc dot info or call (575) 527-5482 before July 30th] 

Wednesday, August 4th

The first meeting of the Fort Bayard Book Club will be Wednesday, August 4th at 7 pm.   Participants will meet at the New Deal Theater at Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark.  The first book read and discussed will be Billington's Buffalo Soldiers of New Mexico, Chapters 1 and 2.  It is open to the public.  [INFO: 575. 956.3294]

The Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park will be hosting a ranger guided Bird tour of the bosque on Saturday, August 7th beginning at 7:30am.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a hat, water, binoculars, and insect repellent.  All events are free with a valid park pass. [INFO:  523-4398]

The Las Cruces Chapter #20, Order of the Eastern Star will hold their annual yard sale on Saturday, August 7th at the Masonic Lodge, 180 E. Boutz in Las Cruces, from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm.  The proceeds from this event will be used to sponsor local charities. [INFO: (575) 521-9736]

Tuesday, August 10th  

The Silver City Food Co-op will be hosting their August Community Forum: "The Art of Making Greek Yogurt at Home" on Tuesday, August 10th and Thursday, August 12th.  Both sessions will be from noon-1pm in the Co-op Community Room, behind the co-op storefront. Co-op Community forums are free and open to everyone. Tuesday, August 10th

The Las Cruces Railroad Museum is hosting a lecture series at noon on the 10th of August called  “Whatever Happened to “See Spot Run” and “Dick and Jane”? – a Pictorial and Narrative Observation of Las Cruces Public School’s History” with Irene Oliver-Lewis, the Executive Artistic Producer and Founder of Alma d’Arte Charter High School.   The talk takes place at the Railroad Museum and is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.  An R.S.V.P. is requested.  [INFO: 647-4480]

Martha Everett will be holding the "What is Qigong" (Kee-gong) workshop from 9:30am-noon at Townside Farm in Silver City on Saturday, August 14th. This workshop will be an introduction to what Qigong is and is open to everyone and all levels. The workshop will include: healing meditation, Qigong exercises and high Qi smoothies, made with veggies from Townside Farm. Mountain View Market will be holding a Mead Making workshop on Sunday, August 10th at 11am at the market.  Participants will learn how to prepare a yeast starter for mead, how to cure the honey and how to carefully monitor temperature and how to age and "rack" the mead.  There is a fee for the workshop. Mountain View Market will be hosting the 1st Chile Cookoff as part of the Sunday Growers Market on Sunday, August 15th beginning at 1pm.  Chili must be cooked on-site with your own power (Solar, propane, etc.), and a recipe must be provided. The 11th Annual Sunland Park/Desert View Elementary Schools Charity Golf Tournament at Santa Teresa will take place on September 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the Santa Teresa Country Club. Friday, September 17th

    • The New Mexico GLBTQ centers at 1210 N. Main holds a variety of regular support groups and meetings monthly for the LBGT community including  Parent groups, transgender support, open mic and coffee house.  More information about groups, days and times can be found by calling the center [INFO:  575-635-4902/888-286-9306]
    • Ciclovia Las Cruces sponsors monthly events that promote health and activities.  On the last Sunday of each month, Ciclovia offers bike riding, walking, jogging, dancing, aerobics and more for the whole family.  The free monthly event takes place from 10am to 2pm at Young Park in Las Cruces.  [INFO:  522-0289]
    • Crossroads City Derby, the all women’s Las Cruces Roller Derby team, is currently recruiting women who want to participate in regular Roller Derby tournaments.  The Crossroads City Derby welcomes women of all experience levels, shapes and languages.       ·       The Foundation for Las Cruces Museums, a non-profit organization that supports the City of Las Cruces’ four museums, is seeking reliable, responsible volunteers to work in their gift shop, El Mercado de los Museos, located in the Las Cruces Museum of Art. While retail experience is helpful, it is not required and training will be provided.
