Wednesday February 1st
In celebration of New Mexico’s Centennial
Year, the Academy for Learning in Retirement’s January lecture series
will continue with a discussion on “New Mexico’s History” with Dr.
Jon Hunner, Professor of History at NMSU. The series will conclude
on Wednesday, February 1st . All lectures are open to the
public and begin at 10:30AM in the Good Samaritan Society auditorium.

and New Heights Faith Community present a free showing of the film “Waddie
Welcome: A Man Who Would Not Be Denied

This is a film that “signifies an effort to sustain justice” when
a community came together on behalf of Waddie Welcome, a man with cerebral

The Southwest Environmental Center
will present a free screening of the film Call of Life: Facing the
Mass Extinction as part of their on-going First Friday Free Film
Series. The film explores the current crisis in both nature and human
nature and how the decision we choose to make - or fail to make - will
affect the habitability of Earth for millions of years to come. The
screening is free, begins at 7:30 and is open to the public. A
discussion on the importance of biodiversity will follow.

The Mesilla Valley Linux Users Group
(MVLUG) will be hosting a Linux Install Fest at NMSU in the Science
Hall building Room 124 on Saturday, February 4th between the hours of
10am and 2pm. Linux is an open source operating system alternative
to Windows and Mac OS. Those who like this operating system, need help
with Linux, or would like help having Linux installed on your computer,

The annual SeedShare event will be
taking place on Saturday, February 4th from noon to 3 at
the
Mountain View Market Community Room. This Free event features
free seeds for your garden, the opportunity to talk with other growers,
and learn about why a local seed bank is so important. There will be
an optional on-going potluck that interested participants can contribute
to by bringing a dish to share. Also, this is an opportunity to
share your extra seeds but you are not required to bring anything.

The Southwestern New Mexico Audubon
Society in Silver City presents a field trip to the Animas Valley and
Lordsburg Sewage Ponds on Saturday, February 4th. Interested

southern end of this trip will be on a dirt road which may be muddy;
high clearance should not be needed but four-wheel drive is strongly
recommended. Bring drinks and lunch; because of the distance, this will
be a full-day trip, probably getting back to Silver City late afternoon/early

is the first of a series of workshops for writers of all ages and levels.

The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Society will host its

Cancer biology and new approaches for
diagnosing and treating specific cancers is the topic of the Academy
for Learning in Retirement’s February lecture series. Dr. Jeffery
B. Arterburn, Regents Professor in the NMSU Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences is the featured
speaker. He will cover the scientific discoveries that have increased
our understanding of cancers as well as advances in diagnosis and treatment
that give cancer patients new hope. The four part lecture series will
begin on Tuesday, February 21st , and continue on Thursday,
February 23rd , Tuesday, February 28th , and conclude
on Thursday, March 1st . All lectures are open to the public

The Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition,
in collaboration with several local organizations, will be hosting the
sixth annual Franklin Mountains Poppies Fest on Castner Range
on Saturday, March 31 at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology at 4301 Transmountain
Road. There will be a full program of nature talks, wildlife displays,
educational exhibits, demonstrations, music and refreshments. This is
a free educational family event and takes place from 10am
to 4pm.

National Historic Landmark tours will be the second and fourth Saturdays
of the month, beginning in October. Tours start on the Museum porch
at 9:30 AM and end in with time to browse the gift shop and the 100

about 2 hours focusing on the Indian Wars and medical history of the
