Wednesday February 1st  

In celebration of New Mexico’s Centennial Year, the Academy for Learning in Retirement’s January lecture series will continue with a discussion on “New Mexico’s History” with Dr. Jon Hunner, Professor of History at NMSU.  The series will conclude on Wednesday, February 1st .  All lectures are open to the public and begin at 10:30AM in the Good Samaritan Society auditorium.  There is a nominal fee and no advance registration is required.  (INFO:  522-6512)

The Progressive Residential Service and New Heights Faith Community present a free showing of the film “Waddie Welcome: A Man Who Would Not Be Denied on Wednesday, February 1st from 11:30 am to 1pm at New Heights Faith Community, 2425 Jordan St. (1 block north of University).  This is a film that “signifies an effort to sustain justice” when a community came together on behalf of Waddie Welcome, a man with cerebral palsy. The Southwest Environmental Center will present a free screening of the film Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction as part of their on-going First Friday Free Film Series. The film explores the current crisis in both nature and human nature and how the decision we choose to make - or fail to make - will affect the habitability of Earth for millions of years to come. The screening is free, begins at 7:30 and is open to the public.  A discussion on the importance of biodiversity will follow.

The Mesilla Valley Linux Users Group (MVLUG) will be hosting a Linux Install Fest at NMSU in the Science Hall building Room 124 on Saturday, February 4th between the hours of 10am and 2pm.    Linux is an open source operating system alternative to Windows and Mac OS.  Those who like this operating system, need help with Linux, or would like help having Linux installed on your computer, you are welcome to attend.  [INFO:  mvlug at mvlug dot org]

The annual SeedShare event will be taking place on Saturday, February 4th from noon to 3 at the  
Mountain View Market Community Room.  This Free event features free seeds for your garden, the opportunity to talk with other growers, and learn about why a local seed bank is so important. There will be an optional on-going potluck that interested participants can contribute to by bringing a dish to share.  Also, this is an opportunity to share your extra seeds but you are not required to bring anything. Saturday, February 4th

The Southwestern New Mexico Audubon Society in Silver City presents a field trip to the Animas Valley and Lordsburg Sewage Ponds on Saturday, February 4th.  Interested participants should meet at 7:30am at the WNMU Fine Arts Center south parking lot Silver City.  The southern end of this trip will be on a dirt road which may be muddy; high clearance should not be needed but four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. Tuesday, February 7th

Las Cruces Academy invites the public to attend an Open House, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, on Tuesday, February 7th.  Interested attendees will have the chance observe Chinese and English classes, or after school, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, when they may meet with teachers. The Dona Ana Arts Council in the Rio Grande Theatre will be showing “Made In New Mexico” , an hour-long documentary that takes an inside look at the film and media industry in the state. Southwest Festival of the Written Word and Western Institute for Lifelong Learning feature a writing workshop by Sharman Apt Russell, “Fruitful Questions: Generating Writing” on Wednesday, February 8th from 1 to 5 at the WNMU campus in Silver City. This is the first of a series of workshops for writers of all ages and levels. The workshop will help those just starting as well as more experienced people to spark their imaginations. Thursday February 8th  
The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Society will host its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 8th at 6:00 pm at the Senior Center on Victoria St. in Silver City.  The meeting begins with a potluck, continues with the Rock Draw, and finishes with the program. The program will be presented by Brian Fuller from Grant County Search and Rescue. Participants need to bring their own utensils, plates, and beverage. The Las Cruces Dog Park Coalition will hold its 2nd Annual Dinner Meeting on Saturday, February 11th beginning at 5:30pm at the Conference Hall of the Las Cruces Association of Realtors.  Entertainment will be provided by Ross LeCompte and the Jazz Hounds, who will play until 9:00 PM.  Tickets are available in advance for members and non members.  A short meeting will involve the election of some Coalition Directors and reports from the treasurer and president. Nevil "The Shadow" Shed who was a member of the first all-black college basketball team at UTEP, will be speaking at NMSU for Black History Month. The team was the feature of the movie “Glory Road”.  Shed will speak at the NMSU screening of "Glory Road" at 7 p.m. Friday, February 17th at the Corbett Center Auditorium.  It is free and open to the public.

The Guadalupe Montessori School in Silver City will be holding a Winter Gardening 101 workshop on Saturday, February 18th from 1 to 4pm at the School garden.    This workshop will cover the basics of winter clean up and maintenance in the garden. Soil building techniques such as composting, soil remediation and cover crops will introduce ways to build the health of your soil. Cancer biology and new approaches for diagnosing and treating specific cancers is the topic of the Academy for Learning in Retirement’s February lecture series.  Dr. Jeffery B. Arterburn, Regents Professor in the NMSU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences is the featured speaker.  He will cover the scientific discoveries that have increased our understanding of cancers as well as advances in diagnosis and treatment that give cancer patients new hope.  The four part lecture series will begin on Tuesday, February 21st , and continue on Thursday, February 23rd , Tuesday, February 28th ,  and conclude on Thursday, March 1st .  All lectures are open to the public and begin at 10:30AM in the Good Samaritan Society auditorium.  There is a nominal fee for each lecture and no advance registration is required.  (INFO:  522-6512)

The New Mexico Women's Foundation's Rag Rug Festival will be taking place Saturday, March 3rd and Sunday, March 4th at the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. The Alamogordo Speaker Series presents: “Enchantment: The First 100 Years” on Friday, March 23rd at 7pm at the Flickinger Center for the Performaing Arts in Alamogordo.  The story of New Mexico since statehood in 1912 will be presented in a photographic retrospective by keynote speaker, UNM Professor of History, Dr. Richard Melzer.  The program features Dr. Melzer’s newest book, New Mexico: Celebrating the Land of Enchantment. Saturday, March 31st 

The Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition, in collaboration with several local organizations, will be hosting the sixth annual Franklin Mountains Poppies Fest on Castner Range on Saturday, March 31 at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology at 4301 Transmountain Road.  There will be a full program of nature talks, wildlife displays, educational exhibits, demonstrations, music and refreshments.  This is a  free educational family event and takes place from 10am to 4pm.

    • Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark tours will be the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, beginning in October. Tours start on the Museum porch at 9:30 AM and end in with time to browse the gift shop and the 100 year old Commanding Officer's house/ Museum. The walking tour lasts about 2 hours focusing on the Indian Wars and medical history of the 1866 -2011 fort. Wear comfortable clothes and bring your camera.
